Re: How much noise is too much noise??
Message:Hi. Read your question on the Cakewalk Forum, and I think I can help you. You're right, -44db is a little high. I'm using a Creative Labs Soundblaster 16 PCI (about $30 US) to record tracks. It only allows stereo recording, but that is fine for me. I'm achieving S/N ratios in the neighborhood of -70 db.The trick I used was this: 1.) Make sure you record through your line input *not* the mic input. The reason this is important is that most PC soundcards have cheap mic preamps that add noise. 2.) Reduce the recording level of your line input to about 15% of max value, and raise the level of whatever you're recording to compensate. You'll need to experiment with these values, but the general approach has worked very well for me.
