Message:
A lot of folks -- including me! -- have been having difficulty with telling the new Cakewalk SONAR which MIDI devices to use. Things worked fine in the older Pro Audio, but somehow, SONAR couldn't seem to see all the MIDI devices that I KNEW I had.

After a lot of hair pulling (which I can ill afford!), I finally found out how to fix the problem.

Some soft synths use the older (and slower) MME interface, vs the newer, faster WDM style interface. Cakewalk SONAR assumes that you are only interested in using the newer style (WDM) synths.

So when SONAR shows you a list of inputs and outputs for MIDI devices, by default it ONLY shows you the new-style FAST ones (figuring, I suppose, that you won't bother with those old things anyway).

Some of us, though, (like me on my laptop) are stuck with the old style stuff, and I'd rather use that old MME interface synth than NOTHING at all.

What we have to do is to tell SONAR to *use* the old stuff, the MME (slower driver) interface.

Here's how:

Go to SONAR's Options | Audio... | Advanced (tab)
Then, under "Playback and Recording", click on the down-arrow beside "Driver Mode". Check the "MME (32 bit)" choice.

That should give you back your older MIDI output choices (For me, it gave me back the "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth MIDI").

This is not a perfect solution, because there was a *reason* Cakewalk defaulted to IGNORING those old MIDI interfaces. They are slower, and you'll find that your latency time is worse (maybe even far worse) when you use the MME interface. The BEST thing is to get a new sound card which supports Wavetable synth through WDM (the FAST way) -- and remember to change BACK the Driver Mode setting to "Use Default" when you've upgraded.

However, for those of us who temporarily have NO OTHER WAY to play MIDI output, Cakewalk did give us a choice. It's just a little UNobvious how to make that choice. (I finally found it in the SONAR manual chapter on "Audio Performance", in a comparison twixt WDM and MME.)

Good luck.
