Looks like youve set everything ok.

See my reply to the guy who wanted to record mic input, just make sure youve selected recording to come from MIDI/sound card

If you want to record vocals while playing back MIDI you'll need a pair of headphones so the mic doesnt pick up MIDI playback. But youll also need to select recording properties to pick up MIDI only. Am not sure how XP handles this but in W2000 right click volume icon in system tray select Adjust Au...

These questions you've got...

Don't forget to ask each one five different times the way you've done on this board, that always produces a useful response...

...such as this one.

<I've got all the other components picked out>

You should do this the other way round. Select a motherboard and suitable processor then the other components to support that configuration. Im running a Pentium IV 2.4GHz but I had decent system running on a PIII 1.6GHZ processor

Assuming you can hear the MIDI track play create an Audio Track arm the track using the REC button, turn off the metronome if required then press R to record. MIDI files will play and will record in the audio track assuming youve selected the correct port and your Windows Mixer settings are correct ...

Is it a midi or audio track?

Do you mean the volume jumps up and down audibly or the meters jump up and down (theyre meant to)?

If the volume is audibly increasing and decreasing in a midi track you probably have some extra midi volume related data in there.

This is a strange one.

I wonder if it is the soundcard. Perhaps some electrical component on the card is heating up and not performing properly?

I'd suggest buying a cheapo card from a PC fair for a few quid and seeing if you get the same problem.

To record the sound of the music create an audio track, perform a mixdown and burn the wave/mp3 to CD.

To record the music notation you're creating create a Cakewalk BUNdle file I believe which contains everything.

There's also a .WRK file but Ive never used this option

Is there another soundcard built into your motherboard that this message could be referring to?

My PC has one, I deactivate it from my system setup. It is stereo but I just prefer my SoundBlaster card.

<and it records on cakewalk> Presumably you mean the track is a recording midi data. As Butch said got into Windows Volume Control Options/Properties. Select Recording and one of these should be equivalent to what you hear through the computer speakers. It'll probably be called something like "What ...

Did you copy track 3 to track 4 or record them separately? I seem to recollect having trouble like this in Cakewalk when copying notes. I'd record several notes in a bar, copy and paste it to the next bar (same track) then change a note in the first bar and the second one would change too. it was li...
