A sound card is a piece of computer hardware that usually plugs into the rear of your computer. It provides all of the sound that comes from your PC. You can run speakers from it, midi instruments to it, microphones etc.
There are soume sound cards that are built in.

They can be cheap, and expensive depending on what it can do. Look into some computer basic skills on the internet.
