sound card trouble

hey I'm new to recording, i bought sonar and I figured it would be more than what i need to start recording professionally.
I'm recording through a sound blaster live 5.0 sound card 16 bit.
When I play through the card on my speakers it sounds fine, but when I record its like a whole octive lower!!
Does anybody know why this is happening and maybe have a suggestion of sound card I can use if this one won't work.
