does anyone know of a plugin or program that will analyze a midi file and tell me which finger should be used to play each note with?

I know that Band In A Box will show you the keyboard when the notes are bing played. There may be some shareware programs that do the same.

thanks brian, but what i'm picturing is a program or plug that has virtual hand icons whose fingers light up (or something like that), while the sequencer plays each note

Voyetra used to do a piece of software called Teach Me Piano. It was an interactive piano tutor program and I think it had that feature. You could check out the Voyetra web site.
