Track 1 silent, subsequent tracks okay

I've been using the older versions of cakewalk for years, but this is my first go at Music Creator.
When I work with multiple staves (tracks), it seems that the first track arbitrarily picks some odd midi output that doesn't work, and the subsequent tracks pick the correct one and work just fine.
How do I go about changing that first track to the right output, and how can I fix it so it always comes up with the correct output?
