Overwhelmed - which software to buy?

I am new at home recording. I will record myself only, I play mostly acoustic instruments (guitar, fiddle, banjo) but will need to record electric guitar and electric bass guitar also. I'm overwhelmed with software choices - how does one determine which software version to buy. For example, why would I choose Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro over Sonar Home Studio 6, (both the same price?) Or is FL Studio software or Cubase a better choice? My computer is a new Dell with Vista, 3Gb RAM, Duo processor. Any suggestions, please?
