I am working with an existing song that has variations in tempo. I recorded a song to an audio track and made adjustments in the tempo so midi tracks it accurately. I now want to delete the audio track and save the tempo info to a standard .mid file. I cant figure out how to do this. Can anyone help ?

If you just want to record control type data you will still have to open a midi track and insert the tempo changes via the insert menu on that track.
