poor audio quality from guitar

I have my guitar run from my amp to my soundcard via the headphones jack on the amp and a 1/4'' to 1/8'' converter. The audio records fine, there's no clipping etc, but the playback is full of "noise" from the amp I suppose. I tried eliminating it by using the filters such as AC hum, but they didn't do anything at all it seems like. I'm hoping that its not because of a lousy sound card (Sigma Tel) or anything, but I'm clueless as to how to quiet the buzz. Suggestions?

You could try miking the amp and into the mic in on the sound card. That will also pick up the speaker characteristics of your amp.

If you have any sort of pre amp try using that between the guitar and the line in on the sound card. Old portastudio's are good for this type of thing.
