I'm looking for a hardware/software solution that will allow me to record a band simultaneously. Perhaps 8 discreet tracks? It's an R&B project and we savor the grit and interplay between musicians - not too interested in digitizing an idea and fleshing it out artificially (my interpretation, however flawed, of MIDI) Perhaps I need some schooling here and I'm not adverse to some criticism - just trying to get a handlde on this stuff. Thanks for your patience and guidance.

If you plan on using a PC or lap top then any sequencing software ie Sonar or Home studio will be capable of recording 8 tracks at once but you will need either a soundcard (PC) or audio interface (Laptop) with at least 8 inputs.

Another option woulb be to buy a multitrack recorder a bit like the old tape type but this time with an internal hard drive. There are many of these on the market Yamaha, Roland, Mackie, Behringer etc. You can then record you band to the multitrack hard drive and then hook it up to a PC for editing and post production.

Have a look at some sites like Digital Village, Turnkey, Studio Spares etc. These are UK sites but they will give you some ideas of what you need and at what price.
