how is cakewalk for producing techno ?

ypu may be happier with acid. although SOnar 3 does read acid loops, etc... are you plannning on playing your own instruments or working with audio clips?

I really like it for use with keyboards.... Look to see if you can find the Cakewalk Instrument Definition file for you keyboard (.ins). If you can you won't have to write it...

An interesting tip: play with the pattern brush, you can do some pretty cool effects using the pattern brush to pulse notes on a keyboard and then doing filter sweeps or knob tweaks.

My clavia nord and rs7000 hitched up really easy to Cakewalk. all the knob tweaks are recorded. You can use loops in Cakewalk but they are easier with Live (in rewire)

Live doesn't do midi though...
