Music Creator and a DR5

Postby jacoblues » Sun Jan 25, 2004 11:03 pm

I am new to the world of midi. I have the "wonderful" GS Wavetable SW Synth on my computer and an M Audio 24/96 sound card with midi in/out. I do not like the sounds from the GS wavetable when I play my midi files. How can I use the sounds from the DR5? Especially the drums. If I can't, what kind of synth should I use.

The good thing about the 24/96 card you have is, with the latest drivers, you can achieve nice low latency. You could use any softsynth to play your sounds. Things like the Edirol VSC which comes free with a lot of cakewalk products will certainly sound better than the GS wave table.

You could also use a sampler and play samples of real intruments. There are free samplers about, the DS404 from Computer music is especially good and quite easy to use. You can also get dedicated DS404 sounds and samples from the same place.

Soundfonts are another option. Again you will need a soundfont player or smapler that can play sound fonts. Try this place for info on softsynths and links to download free synths, samplers and soundfont players.

To play the sounds on your DR5 you will have to set your midi output to the DR5 and then connect the audio out on the DR5 to the audio in on your soundcard and record the sounds as audio.
