I have an old edition of Cakewalk Club Tracks that ran fine on Windows 98. However, when I have tried installing it on my new machine, which runs Windows XP, I repeatedly get an error message telling me that CT was not designed for Windows NT, and that I should upgrade to Win 98 or ME, which of course would be "downgrade" for me.

Any way around this? I know that Win XP is based upon NT technology, but I have never found an old software program that I cannot install onto my new system.

If you have set your file system set to NTFS it won't work. You might have to use the FAT32 file system which is the same as Win98.
