Is this a valid or suitable way to use producer..??? + Help

Dear all,
I'm playing with producer at the moment and wish to use it in I believe a simple manner. I wish to use the microphone live to take advantage of the Digital signal processors for Karaoke use. I will be setting up different sliders and arming them as appropiate for specific singers. However when monitoring the Lag is ridiculous. (I am currently testing just with cmedia on board chipset) Will it be ok with say an audigy....? I seem to suffer from PCI Chatter as well (Ticking & Whistling) any comments appreciated.
Alternatively are there better products more suited to my needs.
