First day -Music Creator - cannot record

I am very PC experienced but not with Cakewalk or the like.
I have set up my MIDI inputs and outputs as in the book but when I try to record as on page 2-13, the computer does not respond as it should. I go thru instruction 3 setting for MIDI Omni but the Transport toolbar Record option is greyed out so I can't go any further
