A little help, must be missing something

I'm using PA v9 and I've recorded a MIDI string to my digital piano and want to add an audio track. The MIDI part plays fine. When I try to record the audio part I get nothing. I seem to have everything set correctly, I do see meter activity from the microphone, and if I open a brand new project and record an audio track with the same settings it works, just not in the same project as the MIDI part. Any thoughts, please?
