cakewalk 9 level question

Can someone help me out here...im recording drums into cw9...when i hit the tom my track meter jumps to about -18db...i record it....play it back...barely shows up in track veiw and almost unheard during playback....playback meter volume are set a zero ..main meters peak at about -42db....any suggestions..ty

Ok i may have figured it out..outputs on my soundcard were set to. -10...now at -4 much better volume coming out..still barely showing up in track veiw..is this normal ?...ty
