I need to understand how to get my midi keyboard to accurately speak to my Cakewalk Home Studio app.

I've been looking at the patch ini files and I see certain apparent headers in brackets that indicate patch#-to-sound equations, and I tried to alter one of them to match my Kurzweil Mark 10 and assign it to my midi-out port. But when I play back the tracks, different sounds come out despite my patch assignments. What does it take to get it to play the sound I'm telling it to?

I haven't even begun to try to map the drums yet - a task I'm sure will be even more frustrating.

The only articles I find are generic in nature and too theoretical. I'm looking for a precise explanation of all the components of a patch ini file, in hopes that I'll finally understand what's in it and be able to get this communication link working.

I've given up hoping for a Kurzweil Mark 10 set of instrument definitions.
I would just like to know how to set one up. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
