VST and midi

I have recently installed a VST adaptor to get my copy of plex to work within sonar. When i insert say reason as a rewire device i cant get the midi input for my controller to work with the next plugin i open even if i turn off the midi input before i close the reason window. Why is this? Is there a way to run my plugins through the same controller without getting this problem? Help.
