Automating plug ins

Hi,
Hoping someone can help. I'm sure this is a very basic question.
I'm running Sonar 3. I have recorded a Midi keyboard line with an FM-7. I now want to run it through a filter (Frohmage) and alter the parameters to give it that modern moving filter sound. The plug in effect is not automatable with an envelope, therefore I have been doing it manually to hear the sound and movement I want to acheive.
My problem is how do I record the audio output of what I've been doing. The only way I can think to do it is to physically run a line out of my soundcard and back in again to another track and record it as audio. But I'm sure there must be a more sophistcated way to have the adio out of one track be the audio in of another and record it.
Any ideas?
