MIDI Input setup problem

I've tried two machines and cannot get MIDI to work on either. It works with media player when Cakewalk is not open, but not when Cakewalk is open. I've search for answers but seems nobody can give a simple answer to what seems the most basic question. Apart from audio, how the hell do you use Cakewalk without MIDI working? I'm a long term Cakewalk user from way way back, used to run the Cakewalk projects over the net and just got back into it. Man have I missed something.

make sure you:
1- goto options/midi devices
2- highlight the device you want to use
3- click move selected devices to the top.

NOTE: Some USB midi interfaces will show up here but will not work. If this happens, uninstall the device (including registry keys!) and then:
1- install device drivers
2- plug in device
3- let the device install
4- start cakewalk and do the above again.

I had this problem with an midisport a while back. after doing the above everything worked great!
Good Luck!
