No sound at all

I have a pretty early version of Cakewalk. Lately I have had no sound whatsoever when trying to play back music. I checked my midi output ports, which are:

Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth
Creative SoundFont Synth
Creative SB Live! External MIDI

I tried rearranging the order and even tried reinstalling the program. Still no sound. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Leanne

please provide some detail of your entire setup. eg, are you using an external midi module or sound card to produce the midi? Do you have any external midi devices like a midi keyboard connected. What operating system are you using (windows XP etc etc).

Thanks / Jason

I am using a sound card and Windows XP. I don't have an external keyboard connected. The sound has worked in the past with this same setup.

hi Leanne

Obviously first step is to make sure you haven't muted the midi volume in the Master Volume controls in the control panel. Make sure SW Synth volume is turned up.

The other main thing to check is go into control panel and go to Sounds and Audio devices (if you are looking in Classic View). Click on the Audio tab and down the bottom you should have an option for midi music playback. Make sure you have Microsoft GS Wavetable selected and not MPU-401.

I assume you can hear other sounds and it isn't a problem with your sound card?

Yes, all my other sounds are working fine. It's just the sound in Cakewalk. I checked everything and went through the sound troubleshooter also. Nothing is muted, the volume controls are up. I also tried running the compatibility wizard since this is an older program. No luck.

It's Score Writer for Windows 1.0. Is it ancient?

I got it to work. I knew if I fiddled around with it enough I might. I had three devices under MIDI ports. I had them all highlighted. So I tried just highlighting the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth alone, and that did the trick. Thanks anyway for all your help!
