Same MIDI issues others are having, different hardware

I'm not entirely new to audio (I've worked mainly in analog), but I'm definitely new to MIDI--and so far, I find MIDI really exasperating. From reading various posts here, I know that the problem I'm having may be categorically somewhat common, but my hardware setup is slightly different from others I've seen mentioned. At the risk of being somewhat redundant with several other users' posts, the problems I'm having are:

1) Can't monitor simultaneous playback of MIDI tracks and audio tracks--a prime example of this being "Home Studio Audio and MIDI Demo," included with CWHS XL 2004.

2) Can't bounce (or otherwise re-record) MIDI tracks to plain old audio. Sure, I could go out from the headphone jack on the keyboard, but that sort of defeats the purpose of--allegedly!--being able to transfer MIDI to audio.

I've investigated all the proposed remedies from several helpful postings here, but none of these solve the problem.

Setup:
Cakewalk Home Studio XL 2004
M-AUDIO Audiophile 2496 soundcard
Yamaha PSR-292 keyboard (note: the MIDI IN/ OUT cables are attached properly... I can transfer files from the computer to the keyboard without a hitch.)
Windows Me (not XP)

Currently, I'm *NOT* using Microsoft's "audio" or "mixer" control panels, since the M-AUDIO Delta software supersedes this. Or at least, I think it's supposed to. Am I wrong?

Thankfully I can still hear the MIDI tracks from Cakewalk playing from the Yamaha keyboard's speakers whether I select "MIDI Out Delta-AP" or "MIDI mapper" in "Options... MIDI devices." Doesn't seem to make a difference either way.

The main reason I need help is that I look really silly wearing two pairs of headphones at once.

May the Force be with you...

Right we'll try and look at it in order.

1) If you are playing your midi back through the delta midi port and through the speakers on the keyboard then the audio will not play along the same channel the midi out channel is a data channel. The audio will come from the line out and whatever sound gear you have connected to that.

2)Midi is data and not sound so in order to bounce the data it must be controlling some sort of instrument, in your case the PSR 292. If you want to record those sounds then you have to connect the Line out/headphone jack to the line in on the soundcard and record them.

Or

Use a virtual instrument. In this case the I think the Edirol VSC comes with HS2004XL so it's the best one to use. Follow the instructions in the manual or help file on how to use it and it will kill too birds with one stone. You will be able to hear your midi (playing the virtual instrument which is audio) and your audio playing form the same source and you will be able to bounce your midi tracks down to audio now.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

andychap:

Thanks for the advice--it appears to have solved the problem. :D Never having used MIDI before (at least not extensively) it feels as if I've just taken a first step into a larger (though initially somewhat confusing) world.

Doubtless I'll have other questions later. :?

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but I've been busy.
