Automation Question

I have a question regarding automation. My controller allows me to automate mixes (fader, pans, etc...). However, I can't get my console's controls to mimic those playing back in a project.
I have traced the problem to the following:
I can not seem to figure out how to convert automation data to midi data. My midi indicator/interface do not show any data being sent during playback.
Studioware used to let you do this. I know Studioware is no longer included with Sonar.
Control surfaces like the FW-1884, etc... work by using custom midi maps, so this must be possible.
Does anyone know what setting would allow this data to be sent?
