Sound issue with Sonar 2 and keyboard

Hello all,
I'm new to this and have a problem with recording sound from a yamaha PSR-78 keyboard with soundblaster 24 card. When I click R to record, static gradually increases to a very loud hiss and if I try to play a drum sound, for example, there is a drum echo that echos at the same rate as the static increase. I have turned the trim down as far as it will go, which has helped with the static buildup, but the echo still occures. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
