problems with choosing midi output -no midi output

hi
i installed sonar 3 on my laptop. sonar 2xl has worked properly.
when i want to choose the midi output (i select it and it gets blue), sonar always repeats, that there is no midi output selected. but it is.
i have got a normal cheap laptop soundcard (ess maestro). but i really think it should work.
can u help?
