The Audiophile 24/96 is always highly recommended.

There's a list of soundcards that are tried and tested with Sonar. It's a couple of years old but worth a look.

What about if I'm recording MIDI? Is an Audiophile 24/96 still a good choice or not?

Hello ...

I am running an Aardvark LX-6 with extremely good results.
Using ASIO I have only 2.9 msec of latency.
My enviroment is a P4 2.4 gig / 512 meg / XP Pro.
I recommend that if you are serious about good sound and want to record using a microphone that you buy the best mic preamp and microphone you can possibly afford. Take your time and do your homework cus what you choose will have a huge affect on your sound.
I have a VTB-1 preamp ( not real expensive but sounds great ) and a EQUTEK-100 mic ( big diapham ) .

I hope this helps .... Bluesmiester

Go with a MOTU 828 if you can swing it. They're firewire and work great. Plus if you pick up a used one it should hold it's value and be easy to sell if you decide to move on to something bigger.

Stay away from USB cards.

I had SB, Lexicon Core, and had bad results. No stable support for ASIO and ASIO simulation with on board or internal SB type card sucks.

I am much happier with M-Audio USB interface. If I could dig more money I will denfinately go MOTU or higher end interface, but for my budget this is perfect.

Always get stable ASIO supported hardware. After Sonar 2.2 I am in ASIO heaven. 3.0...3.1.1 have really made ASIO solid. Many of NI plugins sounds so different - night and day - when true ASIO audio driver is used. it's like your ears poping when changing to wimpy WMD to ASIO.
