sustaining midi chords

hey guys,
I'm baffled..... how can i set a sustain time for notes in real time (as u play) when playing the VSC, it has no sustain or release controls on the module.... I dont have a sustain pedal hooked to my midi keyboard so I need to just set an appropriate sustain/release/decay time for the stuff i play.....
I dont know whether I explained my problem well, so I'm sorry,, but if you know what I'm on about any help would be really appreciated.
