MIDI keyboard problems/bad audio quality from guitar

This is a copy of a post I posted on the Beginner thread:
I hooked up a keyboard to my laptop and recorded using a MIDI track (obviously), but it seems no matter what effect I have the keyboard set to, when I listen to playback through sonar, it sounds like a 1980s synthesizer. The sound is dummed down and "tinnyfied," so to speak, and it sounds horrible. How can I get the real sound out of my keyboard?
Also, it also seems no matter what effect my electric guitar is on, there's always some buzz/distortion when I play/record it. How can I eliminate this?
