Latency in Sonar 7

I'm using Sonar 7 and a RME fireface 800.
If I turn off the INPUT ECHO I cannot hear what I'm recording. But if I turn it on, there is latency or a short delay.
If I turn off the INPUT ECHO I should still be able to hear instruments through the RME, but some inputs are not audiable even with the RME levels turned up on the Fireface mixer. Some I can hear and others I cannot, but I can't find any rhyme or reason to it.
Anyone using a RME interface too? Anyone have any suggestions?
Might I have screwed up the matrix in the fireface?
