I was a happy Sonar user, until I upgrated my previous 2.0 XL version to Sonar 3.0 Producer Edition. Since I installed this version I have great problem opening a file, either this is an cakewalk project or a simple midi file.
My PC crashes and it freezes and all I can do is to reset it.
I've tried to choose different kind of drivers in the Audio Menu (WDM,MME,ASIO) but I face the same problem.
My soyndcard is a SBLive Player 1024 and my PC is an Athlon 1.7XP with 512MB RAM
CAN ANYONE HELP ME????

When I use sonar I don't you any other software. I also checked the task manager to see how many proccesses are active and there weren't many of them.
Any other suggestion?

the only other thing i can think of is
try uninstalling sonar, update your drivers and try reinstalling sonar.

There are a couple of fixes you can try that were mentioned in this thread:http://www.cakewalkforum.com/forums/vie ... hlight=fix

They both involve editing the registry so make sure you back up the registry first in case you delete something you shouldn't.

They fix quite a few problems in all versions of sonar so they are worth giving a try.

I agree with a clean install, but before I reinstalled I would do a good Defrag.

By clean install, I mean a complete removal of Cakewalk. If possible reinstall your os and go from there. If not here are directions on how to COMPLETLEY UNINSTALL Sonar from your system:

If youwould like to save your Audio Data folder settings, go to Options >
Audio >Advanced Tab (if you have SONAR 2, SONAR 3, or HS 2004, go to Options >
Global > Audio Data), and write down the exact address of your Data
Directory (Global Audio Folder if you have SONAR 2, SONAR 3, or HS 2004).
After you reinstall, you will need to change this setting back to the
address that you have written down.

A) Completely uninstall Cakewalk from your computer. This is normally done
from Start | Programs | Cakewalk. If "Uninstall Cakewalk" is not available
to you here, use Control Panel | Add Remove Programs. If Cakewalk appears in
this list, uninstall it from here.
Restart your computer.

B) Click the Windows Start button and select Run. At the prompt type REGEDIT
and click OK.
As a precaution, back up your Registry before making edits; do this by
clicking File | Export from within the Registry Editor. If you are using
Windows 2000, choose Registry | Export Registry File. Make sure 'All' is
selected, choose a location, and save the file.

You do not have to save your audio effect presets, but if you want to, do
the following:
* Find the folder that says "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and click the plus sign. Do
this for the folder "Software," then "Cakewalk Music Software," and then
"ActiveMovie." Now left-click on the "Presets" folder once to select it.
Choose File | Export (for Windows 2000, choose Registry | Export Registry
File), make sure 'Current Branch' is selected, choose a location, and save
the file. After you have complete all of these instructions, you may
restore your presets by double-clicking this saved file and choosing 'yes'
to add the information to the registry.

Now delete the following keys using the instructions below:
* Find the folder that says "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and click the plus sign. Do
this for the folder "Software," and then the folder "Cakewalk Music
Software." If you only have one Cakewalk program installed, you should
right-click on the "Cakewalk Music Software" folder and select Delete. If
you have more than one Cakewalk program installed, find only the folder for
the program you are uninstalling (i.e. "Cakewalk Home Studio" for Home
Studio 2002). If you have SONAR, and have more than one version installed,
expand the SONAR folder to view the different versions. Right click on the
appropriate folder and choose Delete. Now minimize all open folders.
* Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE," and click the plus sign. Do this for
"SOFTWARE," and then for "Cakewalk Music Software." If you only have one
Cakewalk program installed, you should right click on the "Cakewalk Music
Software" folder and select Delete. If you have more than one Cakewalk
program installed, find only the folder for the program you are uninstalling
(i.e. "Cakewalk Home Studio" for Home Studio 2002). If you have SONAR, and
have more than one version installed, expand the SONAR folder to view the
different versions. Right click on the appropriate folder and select
Delete.

C) From the Windows Start menu, search for and delete the following files:
If you have Guitar Tracks Pro: GP2AudDX.INI and AUD.INI
All other programs: TTSSEQ.INI and AUD.INI

D) Restart your computer. Go to the Start Menu, select Run, and type in
MSCONFIG. Under the General tab of the System Configuration Utility, select
Selective Startup, uncheck Load Startup Items, and restart your computer.
This will stop all background applications from loading unless you manually
re-enable them. (If a "System Configuration" message appears the next time
you restart your computer, simply check the "Do not show me this message
again" box and hit OK.) If you are running Windows 2000, instead of using
Msconfig, hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and manually shut off all applications and
processes that are running.

E) After all background applications are turned off, reinstall Cakewalk
using the default directories.

Let me know if you have any problems
Good Luck!

cool, let me know. I would be interested to see if it works. Also bad plugins will also cause this problem.

:(:(:(
Unfortunately, I didn't solve the problem. I formatted my disk (!!!), I setup Windows XP again, and then, without having any other program installed, I installed Sonar 3. I crossed my fingers and.....when I opened a project .......... my PC freezed once again!
I found that I could open a project only if I had disabled my card's (SB Live) drivers from the Audio Options Menu, but obviously I couldn't hear a thing by doing that.
So, I was wondering if my soundcard is the problem, or the combination with the Athlon XP I've got.
One of these days I'm going to buy M-Audio's Audiophile 2496 card, but I don't know if this could solve my problem....

Well at least we have narrowed the problem down to your card. I am under the impression that SOundBlaster cards are compatible with Cakewalk. However, they really aren't all that great (sorry). One thing you may want to try is picking up a generic soundcard at Best Buy, Circut City, etc... for about 15 bucks and seeing if that solves the problem.

Do you have the newest drivers for your card? If not start there.

So you think it's my card causing the problem? I've already tried the latest drivers but again the problem wasn't solved. I know that Soundblaster Live is not a serious card for music production, but until now I really didn't have compatibility problems with Cakewalk's software (I used it with Sonar 1, Sonar 2 XL with very good results).
What can I say...
I'll just wait a few days until the dealer of the Audiophile card has available one (you see I live in Greece and there is a problem finding such type of cards in stock).

Did you have this problem before you updated your drivers? You m ay want to completely uninstall your card and try that from scratch (remove card from machine along with registry keys, etc...)

Good Luck!

Hello again (it's me, ex-"Guest", finally I registered to the Forum :D)
I'll try your advice. I had already installed the new drivers of the soundcard, when I first installed SONAR 3 so I don't know if the drivers are responsible for the problem...
