I have a computer with sound built in on the motherboard. Cakewalk reports no midi devices. Do I have to buy a soundcard? Why won't Cakewalk work?

Most on board soundcards have some sort of midi capabilities even if it is just the Microsoft GM wavetable.

The quickest way to check is right click a midi file and select properties > preview press play and if you hear sound then you have midi. Try reinstalling Cakewalk.

If you do not hear sound, check in the contol panel in sounds and multimedia (don't know what OS you have) and make sure you have something selected for midi playback on the audio page. If there is nothing there check the midi devices on the devices page.
