You can get VST plugins, things like effects, EQ, compression, reverb that type of thing. You can also VST Instruments ie soft synths. Cakewalk does not use the VST standard it uses the DX (Direct X)standard for DX plugins and DX instruments.

You can however use VST in later Cakewalk products ie Sonar, Homestudio and Project 5 by using a VST wrapper. This converts the interface between the cakewalk application and the VST to DX standard. Sonar 3 has a wrapper built in but all other products you need to either download a free one or buy one from Cakewalk that is tried and tested.

Here is the link to the Cakewalk one. http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/VSTAdapter/default.asp

The KVR site is about the most useful site there is for information on Virtual Instruments and plugins of all standards both commercial and free. It give all the latest news and updates and aslo provides links to sites and downloads. Well worth a look.
