constant crashes

Everytime I use cakewalk studio, whenever I apply an effect, or sometimes even when i attempt playback it crashes and I have to restart my comp. I have win xp with great computer lots of hard drive 180 g. Plus 512 memory. what is wrong ?

Make sure you have no application or unecessary services running in the background. The problem ones are screensavers, antivirus software and task schedulers. These can be disabled in Run > msconfig.

Make sure sure system is optimised for recording audio. The MusicXP site has a list of tune up's here http://www.musicxp.net/tuning_tips.php

Also, it sounds like you may have a dodgy plug if that's what is causing things to crash. Are you using any craked plugs? Rescan your plugs folder and try reinstalling the plugs.

Does it always crash with the same plug?

Just a few ideas. Andy is spot on about setting your machine up for audio.
