I am using Cakewalk with an older soundcard, a 16-bit Creative Soundblaster. I actually don't even know the CPU's clock rate but it feels like its around 700MHz (Pentium II). I tried recording guitar (amplified) direct to line in, with sample rate set at 44kHz. The line level was in a good range according to Cakewalk's input level meter. The result was horrible, pocks and hissing, etc. It was so bad that I assume something has to be wrong on the hardware end, the software could not possibly be that crappy. Does anybody know what the min requirements are for soundcard, CPU clock rate, etc. to get CD-quality multitrack recordings?
